'The Ones that Got Away' 2004
Since the river Tyne has been cleaned up the fish have returned and it now contains Salmon, along with Mackerel, Cod, Codling, and Bream. I came up with the idea of a series of giant fish sculptures, 5ft high, which appear to be jumping into and out of the ground. Some of the fish would have their heads showing and others just their tails.
The fish are cast in a polymer with a steel core and coated in a two-tone iridescent paint, which changes colour from turquoise to purple as you move around them.
I worked with pupils from St Peters School in Wallsend to make ceramic bricks that are embedded in the wall that surrounds the fish.
