This is the first original painting I have ever done & I chose one of my favorite subjects the iconic Sycamore Gap Tree. The Winter Solstice celebrates the return of hope to our land & the knowledge that the sun will return along with springtime. A time when life begins again & the tree will come back to life. But in its skeletal, Winter state I find the Sycamore Gap Tree is at its most beautiful. The tree sits in a natural dip on Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland & has featured in my work for many years.
Sadly it was illegally felled on 28.9.23 after standing for 300 years. I can't begin to describe how this has affected & saddened me, it feels like the whole region is in mourning.
The image will live on forever through mine & other artists work.
