Product description
Often what can be seen on the surface is only a small part of what binds the trees to this earth. They may have been guardians for hundreds of years, their history & folklore bring an added mystery to their ancient lives.
I have created an imaginary, ethereal setting for the Ash tree. Multiple layers of colour and texture have been applied to create the dramatic backdrop. In contrast part of the tree is reflected in the Gold leaf panel, representing the history of the tree. Surrounding it is feint, inverted, barely readable text about some of the folklore connected to it.
The Ash tree has long been connected with the folklore of different nations & their beliefs. In northern England, it was believed that if a maiden placed ash leaves under her pillow, she would dream of her future lover and carrying an Ash leaf in your pocket will bring you good fortune. New born babies were often given a teaspoon of ash sap. This then created an intimate bond between the welfare and fate of the tree and person. If the tree was harmed this was reflected in the healed person’s life.
Yggdrasil is the Norse word for the Ash tree. Odin hung from this tree, for nine days and nights so that he might be granted wisdom. Since then the tree is also associated with knowledge & divination. The Druids believed it connected their inner self to the outer worlds, allowing them to move between them.
The print is a limited edition of 150 & is hand finished with either real Gold or imitation Gold leaf. This makes every print unique. The process takes several days & involves multiple stages. I have spent a lot of time experimenting to perfect my technique.
